Public Health Care

The group works to assess public health care status and identify issues for action at the local level in keeping with the Tallahassee League’s Program on Public Health Care. We advocate for affordable and efficient public health care services for all. We educate the public on proposed legislation providing access to health care, mental health, substance abuse and dental care services.

The group has recently been working with members of other leagues across the state on two major initiatives:

  • Advocacy for expansion of Florida’s Medicaid Program to cover uninsured individuals with incomes below 138 percent of the Federal Poverty Level. LWVT members interested in public health care serve on Lobby Corps evaluating legislation that would implement Medicaid Expansion or pass a resolution for an amendment to the Constitution requiring the expansion. In the past, League members have collected petitions for a ballot amendment calling for Medicaid expansion in Florida.

  • Encouraging enrollment in the federal Marketplace to provide more insurance coverage to Floridians.

Under this initiative, League members are currently providing educational materials, writing opinion pieces for local newspapers and utilizing social media to advertise open enrollment periods and inform the public of increased subsidies made available under the federal American Rescue Plan Act.  These subsidies are making coverage under the Marketplace much more affordable for people of all income levels.

Annually, the group organizes a hot topic event on a subject related to public health care.  For more information or to volunteer, email the Public Health Care Chair.
